Methamphetamine was found hidden inside a McMuffin during a traffic stop in a remote Western Australian town last month, police allege, after officers pulled the breakfast sandwich apart and uncovered a ziplock bag of white powder.
Officers released footage showing the stop in the town of Broome, located 2000km north of Perth, in which they searched a fast-food bag full of items from several outlets before pulling apart the McMuffin to reveal a small bag of white powder.
Detective Senior Sergeant Trisha Stjepic said people were becoming more creative in their efforts to hide illicit substances.
"[A] fast-food item is a first, but hiding drugs inside the vehicle we found a lot more common recently," she said.
"[People] are being more cautious and drugs aren't being left out in the open."
People went to extensive lengths to conceal items, she said, including someone who hid illicit drugs in a rubbish bag in the boot of the car.
"When you're conducting searches under the Misuse of Drugs Acts, you obviously have to search the whole vehicle. At times it can be awkward searching through people's food, but unfortunately that's part of the job."
The driver was not known to police and was arrested on August 20.
A 39-year-old Derby man was charged with possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply.
