Prince William has revealed he once dreamed of becoming a policeman or a DJ, admitting his alter ego “DJ Xara” fell short of the standard needed to play school parties.
The Prince of Wales made the confession during a surprise appearance on BBC One’s The Graham Norton Show, which aired in the UK on Friday evening.
William told Norton he thought being a policeman was “quite cool”, before going through a phase where he wanted to be a DJ.
He billed himself as DJ Xara, spelt with an X, but told the host he “wasn’t very good”.
Norton had been discussing the Earthshot Prize with actors Cate Blanchett and Hannah Waddingham and wildlife presenter Robert Irwin, who are all involved with the prize, when he invited William onto the sofa. The studio audience responded with cheers and gasps.
The guests also discussed William’s long-time support for English football club Aston Villa and his love of Christopher Nolan films.
The group spoke about the need to pair optimism with urgency in tackling climate change.
William founded the Earthshot Prize in 2020 to “celebrate and scale the solutions that will repair our planet”. He drew inspiration from former US President John F Kennedy’s Moonshot project, which challenged scientists to send astronauts to the Moon and bring them home safely.
The prize gives awards in five categories: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate. Each winner receives £1 million.
William has committed to the prize until 2030. Organisers will announce this year’s winners at a ceremony in Mumbai, India, in November.
The Graham Norton Show is available to watch on TVNZ 2 on Fridays at 5.30pm and on TVNZ+
