Hundreds of people gathered in Wellington to observe Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day and the state memorial service.

1News estimated about 1500 people were gathered at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul to pay their respects.

Attendees at the state memorial service included Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, former governors-general and prime ministers, MPs, mayors, iwi representatives and Order of New Zealand recipients.

Before the service began, a number of corgi owners walked their dogs along the Wellington waterfront in a tribute based on the Queen's love for her pets.
