What you need to know

  • Early results suggest Wayne Brown (Auckland), Tania Tapsell (Rotorua), Nick Smith (Nelson), Phil Mauger (Christchurch), and Ben Bell (Gore) have been re-elected.
  • Former Labour leader Andrew Little has been elected as Wellington Mayor.
  • Incumbents Jules Radich (Dunedin), Kirsten Wise (Napier), Wayne Guppy (Upper Hutt), and Sam Broughton (Selwyn) have failed in their re-election bids, though some races are very close.
  • So far, 25 councils have voted to remove Māori wards, and 17 have chosen to keep them.
