All Whites announce base for World Cup campaign

All Whites head coach Darren Bazeley.

The All Whites will call San Diego, California, home for the duration of their FIFA World Cup campaign.

It follows a lengthy selection process, with the team handed the University of San Diego's Torero Stadium as their training ground, as well as a team hotel nearby.

"We're really lucky that San Diego was high up on our wanted list and we got it," coach Darren Bazeley said.

"Really good hotel, really good training ground, climate's good. It's obviously close to LA for our first game [against Iran]. It was important that we got a good training ground and hotel that gave us the spaces that we needed."

The city holds extra significance for New Zealand sporting folklore; it was the venue for Team New Zealand's famous America's Cup win in 1995, led by Sir Peter Blake and skippered by Russell Coutts.

"It's great to connect with something! Wherever we go we're looking for the Kiwi story, we do that with people and places," Bazeley said.

Each team participating at the FIFA World Cup must stay at a FIFA-designated base camp within certain geographical clusters.

Teams submit a list of five preferred venues, with higher-ranked countries given their preferred base camps.

The All Whites will travel by road – a two-hour trip – to their opening match on June 16 against Iran in Los Angeles.

The other Group G matches (against Egypt on June 22 NZT and Belgium on June 27 NZT) are a three-hour flight away in Vancouver.

All New Zealand games at the FIFA World Cup will be available to watch live and free from home on TVNZ+ and TVNZ1.
