Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has come through a confidence vote within the National Party that he initiated himself, later saying his MPs had backed him “decisively” before leaving without taking questions from reporters.

The vote followed a lengthy caucus meeting that stretched to around two and a half hours, well beyond the party’s usual timeframe.

Afterwards, Luxon delivered a brief, prepared statement.
