One person died and a second was seriously injured in a crash north of Taupō late last night.

The two-vehicle crash occured on State Highway 1 near Humphrey Road near Kinleith shortly before 11.30pm.

One person was found dead at the scene, while a second was taken to hospital.

The road is closed while the serious crash unit carried out an investigation.

NZTA said northbound traffic should turn left onto State Highway 30 and continue until turning right onto State Highway 32. Turn back onto State Highway 1.

Southbound traffic should do the reverse.
