Arrest after child riding bike struck by car in Tokoroa hit-and-run

A man has been arrested after a child riding a bicycle was allegedly struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run in Tokoroa earlier this week.

The child was on their bike when they were struck by a car on Torphin Cres around 4.30pm on Wednesday, police said.

The driver then fled the scene.

Senior Sergeant Jason Henderson said a man was arrested after police carried out a search warrant at a local address this afternoon.

The vehicle allegedly involved in the incident was seized for examination.

A 43-year-old man was due to appear in Tokoroa District Court on April 30.

"We’re proud to have quickly hold this offender to account for his crime," Henderson said.

"Thankfully, the child is also recovering in hospital."

Henderson thanked the community for their assistance that helped officers track down the man allegedly involved.

Police did not believe anyone else was involved in the incident.
