US President Donald Trump has made a joke about the age gap between him and his wife, Melania, saying they "won't be able" to match his parents' record.

Trump, 79, is 24 years older than his wife, who he met in 1998 and married in 2005.

At an event with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, the President spoke about his parents' 63-year marriage.

He then turned to his wife, who sat behind him, saying, "Excuse me, if you don't mind".

"That's a record we won't be able to match, darling.

"I'm sorry, it's just not gonna work out that way. We'll do well, but we're not gonna do that well."

While the audience laughed, Melania had a slight smirk but remained silent. The King had a similar reaction.

It followed fallout from a joke made by late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who claimed he was also poking fun at the couple's age gap.

Kimmel joked that Melania had a "glow like an expectant widow" during a skit parodying the upcoming White House Correspondents' dinner.

Just days later, the President, members of his cabinet, and guests at the actual dinner were evacuated after shots were fired when an armed man attempted to storm in.

Suspect Cole Tomas Allen has been charged with the attempted assassination of the President.

Melania took to social media after Kimmel's joke, accusing him of using “hateful and violent rhetoric".

She called him a “coward” who “hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him”.

The President said Kimmel should be "immediately fired" by Disney and ABC, who run his show. He claimed Kimmel's joke was a "call to violence".

Kimmel explained his joke was a "light roast joke about the fact that he's almost 80 and she's younger than I am".

"It was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination, and they know that, I've been very vocal for many years speaking out against gun violence in particular," he added.
