The first crash happened north of Taupō at around 7.15pm, and the second on Auckland's Waiheke Island at around 1.30am.

Two people have died in separate single-vehicle crashes overnight, bringing the preliminary King's Birthday holiday road toll to seven.

Police were alerted to the first fatal crash in Wairakei, just north of Taupō, at 7.25pm last night.

The sole occupant of the car had collided with a tree on Poihipi Rd.

"The death will be referred to the coroner," police said.

Emergency services were called to the second crash on Waiheke Island at around 1.30am.

St John responded with one ambulance but said its crews were not required for transportation.

"Sadly, one person was pronounced deceased at the scene," police said.

The serious crash unit examined the scenes of both crashes.

Meanwhile, three people have been killed in a two-vehicle crash on SH1 Desert Rd that police were called to at around 2.55am. One person was still unaccounted for.
