An 81-year-old Christchurch woman was found lying in long grass beside a walking track after spending four nights in the elements, police say.
Valerie Hargrave was located in Ferrymead on Tuesday evening on Tunnel Rd, between a walking track and the road, after disappearing from her Woolston home on Saturday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Baillie said she had spent four nights outdoors.
"It is not yet known how long she had been in that location. Enquiries into her movements remain ongoing."
Baillie thanked the community and local businesses for their assistance with the search.
"Valerie remains in hospital receiving medical care and is surrounded by her loved ones. Our thoughts are with Valerie and her family as she recovers."
In a statement shared on Facebook, Hargrave's granddaughter thanked the community, police and search and rescue teams for their "incredible support and kindness" throughout the search.
"We are so pleased to have Val found safe and alive after an incredibly worrying few days," she said.
"We are so amazed and thankful for the way this community has shown up and effortlessly helped us search for Val."
She said the family was "overwhelmed with relief" at the outcome and grateful for everyone who helped bring Hargrave home safely.
"We are certainly hugging her a little tighter today. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts."
