Wellington was slammed by heavy rain overnight, with 77mm falling in just one hour, leading to flooding and landslips.

Fire and Emergency was alerted to more than 150 incidents, mainly across Vogeltown, Mornington, Newtown, Berhampore, Kingston, Island Bay and surrounding areas.

Wellington Mayor Andrew Little said the city’s southern suburbs were the worst-hit and had suffered “serious flooding” – and there was more rain to come.

The downpour had let to the stormwater system being “overwhelmed”, he said in a message posted on social media.

Anyone who could avoid travelling was encouraged to do so.

“This is a day to be really careful,” Little said.

Parents were urged to check with the schools’ websites to see if they were open.

Wellington City Council was also offering support services at a location in Adelaide Rd.

“There will be more rain to come and emergency services are focused on whet they need to do to help people as that arises.”
