TVNZ political editor Maiki Sherman resigns; Severe weather causes flooding, power outages in South Island; Sir David Attenborough turns 100

'Untenable' position: TVNZ political editor Maiki Sherman resigns

TVNZ’s political editor Maiki Sherman has announced her resignation, saying the pressure of recent scrutiny had made her position "untenable".

In a statement posted to social media, Sherman said there was no excuse for the language she used during an after-hours function at the Minister of Finance's office in May last year.

She described the level of scrutiny in the past week as "unprecedented" and that it had placed "enormous pressure" on her.

Flooding, outages as rapidly deepening low spreads severe weather

Flooding, power outages and road disruptions are being reported as a rapidly deepening low approaches the South Island from the Tasman, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to large parts of the country.

Hundreds of properties have lost power across the top of the South Island, while flooding has been reported on the West Coast and in Nelson and Marlborough.

Two New Zealanders on cruise ship stricken with hantavirus, one still onboard

A New Zealander was among a group of passengers who disembarked a hantavirus-stricken cruise ship before its deadly outbreak was detected, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says.

A second New Zealander had remained on the vessel.

Health authorities across four continents were tracking down and monitoring passengers who disembarked the MV Hondius on the South Atlantic Island of Saint Helena, and trying to trace others who may have come into contact with them since then.
