One person dies after boat capsizes off Kaikōura

One person has died after a boat capsized off the coast of Kaikōura this morning.

Emergency services were notified of a small boat capsizing at 7:10am.

The vessel had two people on board.

One made it to shore safely and uninjured, while the second was found on the beach just after 8am.

They died despite the best efforts of emergency services.

Coastguard said volunteers from Kaikōura attended, but we unable to get in the water due to large swells and rocks in the area.

The survivor was located on rocks on shore.

"Coastguard's thoughts are with the affected family."

St John said it took the survivor to a medical cecntre in moderate condition.

A rāhui is now in place covering a 100 metre radius around the Kahutara river mouth. It is in place until June 1, Te Runanga o Kaikōura said.
